Content note
This page started out life as 6 separate entries from my now defunct blog, since then I've received a lot of feedback on them and I've decided it should make more sense to hack a real page together with updates instead of continually updating the content in the specific entries.
Introduction
Whilst scanning through the installed packages on my development box I realised that I have 6 editors installed. Well, the 4 I was shown plus xemacs and mcedit(from Midnight Commander).
- app-editors/bluefish-1.0
- app-editors/gvim-6.3.068
- app-editors/qemacs-0.3.1-r2
- app-editors/vim-6.3.068
- app-editors/vim-core-6.3.068
- app-misc/mc-4.6.0-r13
And xemacs-2.4.15.39 installed straight from a friend's dforce repo as he fixes bugs really fast.
I'm going to try to run through the list and explain why I use them all. The real purpose here is to explain to myself why I shouldn't remove a few, but I may give you an idea for a new editor/plugin/feature to try.
Throughout the explanations I intend to write a few notes, with questions for you the reader. The purpose of these notes is so I don't have to fully decide what to include and exclude from the entries. If you see something you would like explaining, or you want to bitch about something I've said in general about an editor, drop me a mail.
